These songs were written in the dead of various winters, which impacted the sound and lyrics in an obvious way. I don't keep a journal—I songwrite—so this album is an account of several changing seasons of my life. Depression, feeling lost, and past friendships are some of the heavier themes I explore, but the overarching message (one that is reflected in the title) is one of finding hope and light in the darkness.
The lyrics are personal and are accompanied by stripped-back, acoustic arrangements—but that doesn't mean I didn't have some fun in parts experimenting with some handheld percussion, mandolin, dulcimer guitar, and even some early-morning songbirds.
This EP is a collection of songs that were written and recorded during my time in Denver. Stylistically, this album is all over the place, but what ties it together is a spirit of finding yourself and having fun while doing so.
Most of what I know about producing I learned by shutting myself in my bedroom and figuring stuff out the hard way. This album is a little bit of a record of that. It might not be perfect, but I think that's part of its charm. It brings me back to my time in Colorado when I felt like I hit my stride as a songwriter. So here's to self-discovery and not taking life too seriously.
